Changing Mindsets, Changing the Future: Breaking Stereotypes and Empowering Students' Experience in SMP Darul Ulum 1 Peterongan, East Java

SMP Darul Ulum 1 Peterongan , located in Jombang, East Java, has been a proud participant in the Australia–Indonesia BRIDGE School Partnerships Program since 2010.

Initially partnered with Secret Harbour Primary School in Western Australia and later re-partnered with Newton Moore Senior High School in 2018. Despite little school collaboration in recent years, SMP Darul Ulum 1 Peterongan continues to engage in activities such as Asialink Education’s Youth Forums and the BRIDGE Professional Learning Program (Educator Workshops online and offline) strengthening both student character development and teaching quality.

A key turning point for the school came during the BRIDGE Educators Workshop in November 2023, focused on Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI). The workshop encouraged educators to reflect on how cultural norms and unconscious bias affect classroom practices and student opportunities. Inspired by this, SMP Darul Ulum 1 Peterongan  began to actively shift toward a more inclusive and equitable learning environment.

In early 2024, the school introduced domestic life skills such as cooking and cleaning for all students, regardless of gender. Traditionally viewed as “girls’ work,” these activities became an opportunity for  boys to participate freely and proudly. Many discovered a genuine interest in culinary arts, reshaping outdated assumptions and showing that talent has no gender.

At the same time, girls were supported in entering fields like robotics and science, areas often seen as male-dominated. With guidance from teachers, they developed confidence and technical skills. In August 2025 one girl student won the 12th International Youth Robot Competition, - a such powerful example of what happens when opportunities are equal.

The school’s commitment to inclusion extends further. SMP Darul Ulum 1 Peterongan has also opened its doors to students with disabilities, currently providing educational services for two students with equal treatment, support, and care.

These students are fully integrated into school life academically, socially, and emotionally with inclusive teaching approaches and genuine encouragement from teachers and peers. Their presence is not just accepted but celebrated as part of the school's commitment to diversity.

Recognising that real change must go beyond the classroom, the school has also worked to disseminate gender equality and inclusion values to parents. Through regular meetings and community dialogues, families are encouraged to support their children regardless of gender in pursuing interests, hobbies, and future careers. This alignment between home and school creates a shared understanding that all children deserve equal opportunity and respect.

These inclusive efforts have also influenced leadership in the school. Today, both boys and girls confidently serve in student government roles, taking active part in shaping school life and decisions.

SMP Darul Ulum 1 Peterongan ’s story is a powerful example of what happens when schools commit to breaking stereotypes and embracing inclusion. By changing mindsets, the school is changing futures creating a safe, supportive environment where every student can succeed.

The Australia-Indonesia BRIDGE School Partnerships Program is supported by the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and implemented by the Asialink Education, Asialink at the University of Melbourne.
